NFL Draft: 49ers Scoop No. 3 Pick, Miami Dolphins Deal Back To No. 6

The Miami Dolphins are dealing picks and the San Francisco 49ers are picking up deals.

The Niners are taking over the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, sending the No. 12 pick, a third-rounder this year, and its first-rounders in the next two drafts over to the Dolphins.

San Fran paid a hefty price and clearly has its sights set on snagging a generational player at the top of this year’s Draft. Traditionally, that indicates the team is looking for a new quarterback, but the Niners aren’t revealing their plans. Officially, Jimmy Garoppolo is still very much a part of their future.

Reading the tea leaves, however, the 49ers look poised to scoop up Brigham Young QB Zach Wilson, widely regarded as the second-best quarterback in the class. Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence is the presumptive No. 1 overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Not long after this first blockbuster deal was announced, Miami followed it up with another shrewd move, moving back into the Top 10 at No. 6 after a big swap with the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly gave the Dolphins their six for Miami’s No. 12 and their first-round pick in 2022.

The Dolphins are becoming master-level Draft dealers, collecting picks like cards and fortifying its team with young, high-ceiling players.

(via Yahoo! Sports): The team traded offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Texans in September of 2019 with Kenny Stills and a fourth- and a sixth-round picks. The Texans sent the Dolphins two players and two first-round picks and a second-rounder.

The Dolphins used one of those first-round picks to move back in the first round and eventually select CB Noah Igbinoghene while picking up an additional fourth-round pick.

Now the team has turned that second first-round pick from the Texans into two more first-round picks and a third-round pick. The Dolphins now have two first-round picks in two of the next three drafts to keep adding top young talent around QB Tua Tagovailoa.

Whichever way it goes from here, Miami has given itself great options.
